Mike Leigh Biography

Mike Leigh was born in Brocket Hall, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire to Phyllis Pauline and Alfred Abraham Leigh. His parents and grandparents are of Jewish descent, besides, his paternal grandparents, were Russian-Jewish Immigrants but later settled in Manchester.

After his birth, Micheal’s mum lived with her parents for a while to gain support and solace due to Micheal’s dad serving as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps (He was a doctor).

With his mum back from her parent’s house, Mike Leigh was raised in Broughton, Salford, Lancashire.

Mike attended North Grecian street Junior school. After graduating, he furthered his education and attended Salford Grammer School alongside his friend, the director Les Blair.

It seems Mike’s love for drama began in the all-boys school he attended, seeing as the school had a strong take on theater.

With his passion for cinema and numerous artists, Leigh’s love for art and acting continued to blossom.

In 1963, Leigh later attended Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, the central school for Art and Design, and the London School of Film Technique on Charlotte Street. Like most people, Leigh fell in love with London’s aura and decided to stay.

Mike Leigh Family

Mike was raised in a Jewish household, and from what it seems, he continues with the same belief. After his career took off in the mid-1960s in London, Mike got married to the actress Alison Steadman.

Their relationship took off after they met in 1972 at a movie event in Liverpool. He asked her to feature in his film Hard Labour at this event. During their work together, the two hit it off and got together.

After their marriage in 1973, they gave birth to their two sons, Toby and Leo, born in February 1978 and August 1981, respectively. Alison later appeared in seven of his film and more plays, including Abigail’s Party, Wholesome Glory, and many more.

Subsequently, the two dissolved their marriage after 28 years of marriage in 2001,  after a six-year separation in 1995.

Throughout his marriage to Alison, Mike lived in Wood Green, London. Eventually, Leigh got with a new actress, Marion Bailey, and they live together in Central London.

There is little to no information on his kids. Both sons love to keep their life private, but based on the little we know, the oldest son is 44 years old, while the younger brother is 41.

Leigh’s parents, of Jewish descent, raised Leigh alone in Lancashire, although it is unknown if Leigh had siblings. We’ve gathered that he seemed to have been raised alone by his parents.

Shortly after this period, in 1968, Leigh vacated his flat in London and moved to Levenshulme. From there, he led a class on the drama before directing two big-cast projects for the Manchester Youth Theatre.

Approaching the 80s, Leigh was sure he wanted to make films, and with his different techniques in film and plays, Leigh created many more fan-obsessed tv plays. Some of these are Nuts In May, Abigail’s Party, and much more.

Although due to the loss of his father at the end of 1985, Leigh took a little hiatus and buried himself in publicity talks and teaching at the Australian Film School, Sydney.

Mike Leigh’s technique involved actors’ improvisations during rehearsals to generate characters naturally.

Leigh’s way of directing or writing would involve discussions and rehearsals that would later develop the play or film, which means that actors would perform in the rehearsals based on specific arguments. During or after the exploratory improvisation period, Leigh would work out a plot and order of scenes.

When the sets, story, and structure of the film or play have been created, actors will get the chance to ‘properly’ rehearse until they achieve a ‘Leigh standard’ quality.
