Helen worked as a model and a worker in Chester Weinberg’s showroom. While she was a model, her dad was a renowned tailor and haberdasher. It must have been difficult for Donna’s mother when Gabby died in 1981. At the time, Donna was just three years old.

Karan has an older sister. They were both raised by their mother in Woodmere, New York. She never liked the same things as other growing girls. Instead, she enjoyed softball, basketball, and volleyball.

She showed a strong love for art from her early years, as she spent most of her time in the art department in high school.

After graduating from Hewlett High School in 1966, she went to Parsons School of Design.

Donna Karan Career

Karan’s Career launched at age 14. At that tender age, she lied about being older to get a job in a boutique.

Based on the recommendation of her mother’s employee, designer Chester Weinberg, she got accepted into New York’s Parson School of Design. Karan wasn’t a bookworm and didn’t like going to school very much. As a result, she dropped out of school in 1968.

Karan started working for Anne Klein, the sportswear designer, just after dropping out. Around that same period, she met Mark Karan, a boutique owner whom she would later marry. After a few years of marriage, Donna and Mark divorced in 1978.

Donna’s employer Klein died of cancer in 1974, and this caused Karan’s promotion to chief designer in the company. She was made responsible for all of Anne Kein’s collections for that year.

Karan reconnected with an old classmate Louis Dell’Olio in 1974. The following year, Louis Dell’Olio was brought into the company to work as a designer under Donna’s supervision. The two created many unique and thrilling collections, which resulted in their being awarded the Coty American Fashion Critics Award for two years, 1977 and 1981. Later they were both inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In 1983, Karan introduced to the world a less expensive designer collection. The idea was to make people realize that they could now afford original designers, no matter their paycheck size. She called it Anne Klein II, and it debuted in 1983.

Donna launched her brand, the Donna Karan Co., with seed money from Tomio Taki, a partner in Anne Klein. She started up the company with her second husband, Stephan Weiss. The couple worked as chief executives with the firm until Stephen died in 2001.

On the side, Karan launched DKNY (Donna Karan New York), which debuted in 1988. Her company sold blue jeans, accessories, and perfume. Karan’s company was known for her signature bodysuits, fitted jackets, and heavy jewelry.

Five years after taking her company public, LVMH bought it, but Karan refused a change of name and maintained her position as a chief designer with the brand.

When the board started noticing that her involvement in the company had increased, the directors decided to step her down as a chief designer and would serve only the purpose of an adviser from then on.

In 2016, LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) decided to sell the company to the American Company G-III Apparel Group. They agreed to sell for an estimated $650 million.
